"Indian Canyon is
the only land within traditional Ohlone/Costanoan territory, or,
for that matter, within coastal California between Santa Rosa and
Santa Barbara, that is owned by Indian title in trust with the
Federal government. For native people as well as for non-natives,
it is significant as a place apart, the only 'Indian Country' in
a vast region where all other traces of Indian land ownership
have tragically been lost and not yet regained. "
- Paul Scolari, Historian and American Indian Liaison, National
Park Service
